What's the difference between monotube versus twintube shocks?
The difference between a twin tube and mono-tube is technically quite simple. A twin tube shock is a tube within a tube. The inner tube is the working tube. The outer tube is the reservoir. Twin tube dampers can be gas pressurized and non-gas pressurized. See the diagrams below for more detail.
A mono-tube damper is a single or “mono-tube” design. This is a simple and durable design, allowing for larger working piston and less moving parts. Mono-tube shocks are also “gas pressurized” to eliminate cavitation in the valving, thus providing a “no fade” safe, stable ride.
Each design has pro and cons.
