Where should I put the snap ring on my shock?

Measure ride heights prior to installing snap rings

BILSTEIN Ride Height Adjustable shocks such as the B8 5100 and B8 6112 allow the user to customize their ride height with the positioning of a pre-load snap ring. We are often asked; where should I put the snap ring on my shock? We do not specify which snap ring location will level your truck. We recommend taking some static ride height measurements before you start any work. By measuring static ride height at the front axle and the rear axle you can determine how much you need to raise the front to match the rear. Once you have determined the amount you need to raise the front select the appropriate snap ring setting from the supplied installation sheet.

To measure ride height, make sure the vehicle is level, and measure from the center of the wheel hub to the lower edge of the fender.  Do this on all four corners.

Compare the two heights to determine difference between front and rear. Then per our included installation instructions position the snap ring accordingly.

Tip: You can download installation instructions from our online catalog.

Each notch or groove can provide a different amount of lift depending on the application. This is something else you will want to clarify from the installation instructions.

The 5100 Ride Height Adjustable shock should only be used with the stock OE coil springs. These shocks should not be used with any aftermarket coil springs.

Our 6112 kit comes with a provided coil spring. Some of our 6112 applications have an optional heavy load coil spring that can be used for heavier front end load (bumper, winch, skid plate, etc.). Please see online catalog for more information or contact Bilstein Tech Support.
